Fun (Foodie!) Friday: A Grape Week

Hi Friends,

Sadie here: Did you have a "grape" week?  What plans are you looking forward to this weekend?

We are looking forward to heading to Dewberry Farm (weather - stay nice!).  Well, I don't actually care if the weather stays nice or not since I am warm and comfy in my house aka Mommy's womb.  But I hope the weather stays nice for my family!

As you know, we had a Grape Exploration this week (thank you, Whole Foods Market), and we saved the best for last.  Well, Mommy and I enjoyed this recipe the most.  (And check out the recipe books mentioned in our Monday post for more grape ideas!).  You can also read about our Grape Exploration from Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.

From the green black red: recipes for cooking and enjoying california grapes book that we talked about on Monday:

Fruited Tabbouleh

Fresh grapes and orange take the place of tomato and masses of garlic in this variation of a classic bulgur wheat salad.  This seems to suit a wider audience while still retaining the salad's healthy appeal.

Serves 6
2 1/2 Cups Chicken or Veggie Broth (We use veggie of course!)
1 1/2 Cups Bulgur Wheat
1 1/2 Cups Green, Red, and / or Black Grapes
1 Medium Orange, Peeled and Diced
1/2 Cup Minced Red Onion
1/4 Cup Chopped Fresh Mint Leaves
1/2 Cup Extra-Virgin Olive Oil (We are plant-strong, so we leave out oil.)
3 Tablespoons Fresh Lemon Juice
1 Tablespoon Sugar
1/4 Teaspoon Salt (We leave out salt.)
1/4 Teaspoon Ground Ginger
3/4 Teaspoon Ground Cumin
1/2 Teaspoon Pepper

In a medium saucepan, bring the broth to a boil.  Stir in bulgur, cover, and remove from the heat.  Let rest for 25 minutes.  Fluff with a fork and cool completely.

In a large bowl, stir together the bulgur, grapes, orange, onion, and mint.  In a small bowl, whisk together the oil, lemon juice, sugar, salt, ginger, cumin, and pepper.  Pour the dressing over the bulgur mixture and toss well.  Keep chilled until ready to serve.

... We really enjoyed this tasty recipe, and we hope you do too.  Let us know what you think.  Last weekend we had it as a side with brown rice and roasted tomatoes.  It would also make a great side with a sandwich!

How are you incorporating grapes into your meals?  Have you been to Whole Foods Market lately for your produce?

Thursday's Kids and T(w)eens: "Grape" Snacks

Hi Friends,

How are you?

Finally, *almost* the weekend!  Are you looking forward to the weekend like we are ... ??  Although once we hit the weekend we will be three weeks away from my baby sister's birthday!  Mommy is getting a bit busy with all of her preparation (at school and at home).  Hang in there, Mommy.  Only three weeks left!

And what are you up to this week?

Have you enjoyed our Grape Adventure and our focus on health this week?  If you missed it, be sure to check out our blogs from Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

Today we would like to bring you a snack idea for your older ones.  As you know, this past weekend we went on an organic Grape Adventure at Whole Foods Market, and one of Daddy's favorite ways to enjoy grapes is very simple - frozen!  Instant frozen popsicles.  What do you think?  We think your older ones will love this (be sure not to feed to the younger ones, they may choke).

How do you like to enjoy grapes or other fruits as snacks?  What about your kiddos?  Any creative ways you enjoy them?

Grapes in our freezer - yum!

Me ... Mad Max saying YUM to grapes above (but no, not the frozen ones, I'm a bit young).

Bloggers: Mommy is starting to help me prepare and schedule some blogs ahead of time for the first two weeks of Sadie's arrival (10/22 C-Section).  I will be a very busy big brother for those two weeks (and beyond).

We are going to focus on newborns the first week and siblings the second week.  We would love to have you guest post, if you are interested in joining us!  Leave a comment on our blog, or you can reach us at madmaxandfamily (at) gmail.

Thanks for considering!  We will post this message again, in case you miss it.

next stop: The Health Museum

Hi Friends,

How is your week going?

What is your next stop this weekend?  Does it involve healthy living with your family?  We actually plan to make our first visit to Dewberry Farm (as you read recently in a next stop post).  We hope the weather stays nice (do you plan on visiting soon?)!

But another place we need to visit again soon (that focuses on health) is The Health Museum.  Have you been there lately?  Mommy took me there when I was a wee one, but we need to go back again soon.

If you are outside of Houston, do you have a Health Museum near you?

Be sure to read all about their opportunities for Children and Families.  They have Family Workshops and Discovery Camps.  I can't wait until I am old enough to attend one of these (you can click on the links for more information).  I may become a doctor like my namesake - Great Grandpa Maximino.  It's never too early to start training for medical school.

We'll be sure to share photos of our next visit to The Health Museum!  Share your experience with us too.

In the meantime, you can enjoy a few photos of my weekly exercise at SoccerTots:

Be sure to read more about staying healthy with your family and our Grape Exploration at Whole Foods this week on our blogs from Monday and Tuesday.

Tuesday's Tots and Wee Ones: Happy and Healthy

Hi Friends,

How are you being healthy this week?  Through food?  Activity?  Other?

If you have little ones (like me, Mad Max!) how do you make sure that they live a healthy lifestyle?

We are focused on health this week and on our Whole Foods Grape Exploration.  Did you read our weekend update yesterday?

Today we are sharing a healthy meal / snack idea for your little ones.  As some of you may know, we are obsessed with "fancy" PB & J sandwiches.  There's so much you can do with them!  How do you like to serve your PB & J sandwiches?  Did you know you can serve them with yummy grapes?

Image Credit: Mad Max and Family / Tara J

First you go on a Grape Exploration (at Whole Foods Market)!

You can read more about the above recipe books from our Weekend Update post (yesterday).  The green black red book has a whole section for kids starting on page 99 (including a PB&G (Grapes)) on page 108.  Of course make sure that your little one is old enough to eat grapes, and cut them into small pieces.

Image Credit: Mad Max and Family / Tara J

This past weekend we enjoyed some PB & G(rapes!) (Organic Grapes from Whole Foods Market) with a side of organic popcorn and more grapes.  What a yummy afternoon meal.  Little ones should also not have popcorn, but I'm (Mad Max) old enough to have popcorn now.  Mommy and Daddy tear it in to smaller pieces.  The smaller plate is my plate.  Please ignore the different plates we used - train wrecks, I say!

We also used ... (from Whole Foods Market

Whole Foods Bread (Bread Department)
Golden Organics Natural and Creamy Organic Peanut Butter (No Salt!  No Sugar!)
365 Everyday Value Organic Popcorn (No Oil or Salt Added)

And most importantly, enjoy!

So how do you enjoy your grapes?  How do you make sure that your little ones stay healthy?  We'd love to hear your ideas.

Also Healthy Tidbit of the Day: As far as activity ... I've been practicing my soccer skills.  I started throwing up my hands and yelling GOAL!! when I kick the ball.  This amuses the adults.

Be sure to check us out also on Mad About Town.

Whole Foods shared with us some really GRAPE (sorry, I couldn't help myself) books on grapes: green black red: recipes for cooking and enjoying california grapes (by: Susan Volland) and Grapes from California (edited by: Jim Howard).

We tried many grape recipes, and today I'll share with you one dish that Daddy made.  Let us know how you enjoy your grapes too!

Sauteed Sweet Potatoes with Kale and Grapes
Note: You can also add bacon.

From: green black red: recipes for cooking and enjoying california grapes (by: Susan Volland)

Sweet potatoes and grapes are another wonderful flavor combination.  This makes an especially good side dish for Thanksgiving and Christmas.  For a variation, substitute cubes of tender winter squash for the sweet potatoes.

Serves 6
2 Slices of Bacon, Chopped (We left these out).
1/2 Medium Onion, Sliced
2 Cups Lightly Packed, Steamed, Torn Kale
1/2 Cup of Fresh Orange Juice
1/4 Teaspoon of Salt (We left this out).
1/4 Teaspoon of Pepper
2 Medium Sweet Potatoes or Yams, Cooked, Peeled, and Cut into 1/2-Inch Dice
1 Cup Green, Red, and / or Black Grapes (Halved)

In a large covered skillet or saute pan, cook the bacon over medium-high heat until it is just brown.  Add the onion and cook until it is golden and aromatic, about 3 minutes.  Add the kale, orange juice, salt, and pepper.  Stir well and cover.  Cook on medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the kale is tender, 3 to 4 minutes.  Carefully stir in the cooked sweet potatoes and grapes.  Cover and cook 2 minutes more, until the potatoes are warmed through and the grapes are just soft.  Stir gently to mix and serve warm.

... Yum, delicious!  We enjoyed this for lunch on Sunday.

How was your weekend?  How do you like to enjoy grapes?

Fun Friday: Foodie Organic Fun with Sadie

Hi Friends,

Sadie here!  How was your week?  What was the highlight of your week?

The highlight of our week is probably all of Max's talking lately.  Yesterday, he even said "doggie" nice and clear.  Okay, Big Brother Max ... let's just work on "Sadie."  "Super Baby Sister."

I'm excited to bring you some Foodie Organic Fun today.

On Monday we mentioned our trip to Whole Foods Market to check out their Fall Into Organics events.  Do you include organics in your food and life?

Today we are bringing you some yummy recipes that Daddy and Mommy made with our organics (be sure to check out your local Whole Foods Market for all of their organic options!).

Image Credit: Mad Max and Family

Image Credit: Mad Max and Family

Daddy made a delicious pasta dish made up of only organics from Whole Foods Market.  Recipe included below!  Our Daddy cooks us plant-strong meals, and Daddy even applied to be a Food Coach (we are waiting to hear back - fingers crossed!).

Image Credit: Mad Max and Family

Daddy's Pasta Recipe:

Ingredients (all organic from Whole Foods Market)- 1 Package of Whole Wheat Pasta
- 8-10 Roma Tomatoes (Cut in Half)
- 6-8 Garlic Cloves (Diced)
- 1 Bunch of Fresh Basil
- Black Pepper
- Juice from ½ of a Lemon

Cook the pasta according to package instructions.  Heat skillet on medium, and sauté the garlic with the tomatoes for about 10 minutes (do not use oil to sauté, use the natural tomato juice).

Drain the pasta, and add the garlic and tomatoes in a large bowl.  Season with fresh basil, black pepper, and fresh lemon juice as desired.  Enjoy!

Image Credit: Mad Max and Family

These are the only ingredients we needed for the Quick Vegan Pudding recipe (Whole Foods Market). All of the ingredients are organic except we already had Agave at home (and it wasn't organic).

Image Credit: Mad Max and Family

Quick Vegan Pudding Recipe: (Whole Foods Market Recipe)

Ingredients (all organic from Whole Foods Market except for the Agave):
- 1 block Silken or Firm Tofu
- 1 Can Pineapple Chunks Packed in Natural Juice, Drained and Juice Reserved
- 1 Large Ripe Banana
- 1 Tablespoon Molasses or Agave Nectar
- 1/8 Teaspoon Salt

Squeeze excess water from tofu and break into chunks.  Then transfer to a food processor and blend until smooth.  Add pineapple and banana and blend until smooth, adding pineapple juice to desired consistency.  Add salt and any other additions you like, then serve.  Most importantly, enjoy!

Thursday's Kids and T(w)eens: Scarecrow Festival

Hi Friends,

How is everything going this week?

I'm entertaining all of the adults this week with my impressive SAT vocabulary (or as Mommy says, "starting to say more things...")  Yesterday I said "Cow" and "Ice" (aka Rice).  Mommy is trying to work on "baby" or "Sadie" or "sister" ...but then I respond with "Daddy."  Boy, do I get her!  Haha.

Perhaps my next word will be "scarecrow"?

So what do you like to do with your older ones (kids +) during the Fall?  Haunted Houses?  Scary movies?  What else do they or you enjoy together?

We found a festival that the whole family (even the young ones) may enjoy, and it's a way to get out of town: Scarecrow Festival in Chappell Hill.  We actually went to their Bluebonnet Festival a few years ago, and we really enjoyed it.

Scarecrow Festival: October 13 and 14

Saturday: 10 am - 6 pm
Sunday: 12 pm - 5 pm

More from the Chappell Hill Historical Society:

The Festivals boasts more than 250 juried exhibitors (home décor, gardening, artists, craftsmen, jewelry, clothing, etc.), delicious country-style food, live entertainment and music, and tours of the historic community. A special Children’s Activity Corner provides pony rides, a petting zoo, face painting, barrel train and more.  Admission is free to the festival and museum. Convenient parking for cars, buses and handicapped persons is available.

The Festivals are hosted by the Chappell Hill Historical Society, a non-profit, volunteer organization dedicated to the preservation of the community's history and historic buildings.

The Society's goal is to stage a high-quality, fun show in the downtown, National Historic District. Our town is located among some of the most scenic areas of Washington County and boasts friendly people and a casual lifestyle.

The festival area is Main Street, Poplar Street, and the property behind the Visitor's Center.

If you go ... let us know about your trip!

Be sure to stop by our blogs tomorrow to enjoy some Foodie Fun on Friday (Organics from Whole Foods Market!).  You can also read us at Mad About Town.

Fall into the Arts: Hope Stone

Hi Friends,

You get a bonus blog today!  We've been meaning to share this blog with you for over a week - eep!  Mommy had a tough week (or so) which slows down my blogs.  She's been feeling really tired from Sadie, and now she is sick with a cold (not to mention how much work she has to do).  Poor Mommy ... hang in there!  Almost "vacation" time!

So Fall may also be a time of new activities for your young and older ones.  What activities are they involved in this Fall?  Are any of the activities related to the arts?

So as you can probably tell (being that Mommy is an art teacher), we love the arts in our family.  If you're in Houston, we'd like to bring you information about an arts opportunity with Hope Stone.  We strongly encourage you to try out their classes either this Fall or in the future!  Mommy and I are probably going to try some classes this Fall (once Mommy isn't working), and we will let you know how that goes.

So what is Hope Stone (From Hope Stone below)?

Hope Stone, Inc. is a non-profit arts organization consisting of (1) the choreographic endeavors of Artistic Director Jane Weiner; (2) Hope Stone Dance Company, a professional dance and theater ensemble; (3) Kid’s Play, an artistic outreach venue for children and youth at risk located in Houston and Katy, TX and New Orleans; and (4) Hope Center, accommodating adult and children’s movement classes designed to sharpen the mind, body and soul. Founded in 1997, Hope Stone strives to make art a stronger part of our lives and is dedicated to presenting authentic dance, music and theater performances and nurturing the creative and expressive side of children and adults.

New Children's Classes:

Creative Dramatics is for children ages four to six and connects the young artists with their personal power, through basic theater skills that strengthen confidences and encourage self-expressions and acceptance.

Creative Yoga is also for four to six year olds and provides a safe, fun, loving, judge-free environment that allows for personal expression and creativity, and gives them skills for managing stress and handling powerful emotions.

Prelude Music Class is for all ages (newborns to senior citizens!) led by master teacher Ana Trevino-Godfrey that is intended for families to attend together to achieve basic music competence and teaches siblings music and movement activities to enjoy at home.

Returning Children's Classes:

Parent & Me class is for children 18 months to two years old and introduces little ones to their first movement and music class with the safety and comfort of a parent or guardian as their class partner and focus on the child’s fine and gross motor skills, musicality, creativity and fun.

There are several age-range based Creative Movement classes for children ages two-and-a-half to six years old, where “all children are artists.” These 45-minute classes focus on everything from the development of motor skills and musicality to the experimental exploration of dance as energy in time and space, and builds coordination, creativity, expression and memory.

Read more and find out how to register for classes at Hope Stone.  If you take a class, let us know what you think about your experience!

Tuesday's Tots and Wee Ones: Fall Fashion

Hi Friends,

How is your week so far?

Did you start buying Fall Fashion yet for your young ones?  Your older ones?  Mommy said that she thinks her favorite fashion time of the year for herself and us (me and Sadie) might be Fall.  Boots ... layers, etc.  What do you think?  Plus it finally starts to get cooler in Houston, and anything below 100 (or 90) is just nice.  I personally just prefer to run around in my pampie, but that is just me.

Mommy asked me to share a little bit of Fall Fashion (Holiday Fall Fashion) with you.  Are you gearing up yet for specific clothes for holidays or big events?

Image Credit: Mad Max and Family / Tara J

Image Credit: Mad Max and Family / Tara J

The first photo has some Fall (Halloween and Thanksgiving) dresses and socks for Sadie.  Thanks Gramby and Pops!  Mommy loves the dots and the lil' pumpkin and turkey.  These are both from Carter's.

Mommy also got me a Halloween shirt (second photo) and Sadie a "My First Halloween" outfit.  All of the clothes in the second photo are from Target.  And do you see my shirt has a cape!?

Mommy hasn't found a Thanksgiving outfit for me yet, but she may find me a big boy outfit at babyGap.

Where do you like to shop for fashion for your little ones (or big ones)?  We'd love to hear some new ideas.

Finally, be sure to check out our Weekend Update from yesterday.  We had lots of Foodie Fun over the weekend and more to come this week.  Are you and your family buying organics this Fall?  More on organics in our post from yesterday.

You can also read us at Mad About Town.

Mad for Monday (Max's Weekend Update): Fall into Organics and More!

Hi Friends,

How was your weekend?

Other than Mommy coming down with a cold ... ours was packed to the brim and great!  And does anyone else have Fall Fever yet?  We sure do.  This week we are going to focus on all things Fall.

So what did you do this weekend?

Our weekend ... Gramby and Pops joined us at my SoccerTots class, and we also went to one of my favorite restaurants for lunch, Candelari's.  Gramby helped Mommy prepared our room for Sadie's arrival, but Mommy said we wouldn't share photos until we are finished (stay tuned).  We went to Whole Foods Market to check out their Fall into Organics.  Houstonians, did you make it to buy some organics and enjoy their events this weekend?  We'll discuss this more later this week, but does your family incorporate organic products into your lifestyle?

We had our usual fun Sunday (church, some more Whole Foods time, breakfast treats (Mommy picked us a vegan oatmeal cookie and brownie this week!, and football), and I also am back at music class this week.  I saw lots of ol' friends, and I met lots of new (girl)friends!

Enjoy some photos from our weekend ... stay tuned this Friday for our Fall into Organics recipes we made with all of the food we bought at Whole Foods Market!

Unfortunately I missed Fall into Organics at Whole Foods Market because I didn't have my afternoon nap.  Don't get caught napping at Whole Foods.  Mommy will put you in all kinds of photos!  See below photos of me with all of Mommy's (organic!) Carrots and Peas samples.  Can you spot the samples?  (By the way, Mommy was kind enough to tell me how delicious they were ... but she didn't save me any!).

We got all kinds of organics at Fall into Organics!  See photo above.  Stay tuned (on Friday ... some Foodie Friday Fun) to see what delicious dishes Mommy and Daddy made for me.  What organic products are important to your family?

Thank you Whole Foods Market for inviting us to Fall into Organics and for asking us to share some organic recipes this week.  Stay tuned for lots of Fall and Foodie Fun (and Organics!) this week.
